Tony DeMarco wins the world welterweight boxing championship.
April 1, 1955
The North End resident beats Johnny Saxton with a 14th round TKO before 8,704 at Boston Garden. Describing the celebration in the North End that followed, boxing promoter Freddy Valenti later says, “Parades broke out everywhere. . . every joint stayed open. No one went to sleep that night. . . they stood on fire escapes, banging pots and pans together like cymbals. We’ll never see a night like Tony’s again.” DeMarco loses the title in June 1955.*
